The Vatican has reported that Pope Francis’s condition has gotten worse and that he “remains critical,” noting that the 88-year-old pontiff, while conscious, experienced a severe respiratory episode necessitating “high-flow oxygen” and blood transfusions.
“At the moment the prognosis is reserved,” it said, as Pope Francis spends his ninth night in Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he was diagnosed this week with double pneumonia but has continually gotten worse.
“The Holy Father’s condition continues to be critical, therefore, as explained yesterday, the pope is not out of danger,” the Vatican announced.
“This morning Pope Francis presented a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis, which also required the application of high-flow oxygen,” reports CNN.
