“Please pray for me” – Pope Francis has issued a statement from his hospital bed

Pope Francis shared an optimistic update about his ongoing medical care in a message released instead of his usual weekly Angelus prayer, as the 88-year-old marked his tenth day in the hospital.

According to Vatican insiders, the statement was likely penned a few days ago—before the pope experienced a sudden respiratory episode yesterday, prompting the Holy See to describe his condition as still critical.

“I am confidently continuing my hospitalisation at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment – and rest is also part of the therapy!” the Pope wrote in the statement.

He expressed gratitude to the doctors and staff at the hospital, where he was first admitted on February 14 with bronchitis that later worsened into double pneumonia.

Vatican sources noted today that he continues to rely on oxygen delivered through a nasal tube.

“In recent days I have received many messages of affection, and I have been particularly struck by the letters and drawings from children,” the pope added.
“Thank you for this closeness, and for the prayers of comfort I have received from all over the world! I entrust you all to the intercession of Mary, and I ask you to pray for me.”
