Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, to discuss ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, Zelensky announced Saturday. The meeting follows Trump’s recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which yielded no ceasefire agreement.
Zelensky revealed that he held a “long and meaningful” conversation with Trump, during which the U.S. leader briefed him on the Alaska talks. The discussion, initially one-on-one, later included European leaders. Zelensky expressed support for Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia, emphasizing that key issues should be addressed at the leadership level.
“On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war,” Zelensky posted on Telegram, expressing gratitude for the invitation. He stressed the importance of European involvement in security guarantees for Ukraine.
The meeting comes amid heightened diplomatic efforts, following Trump’s unsuccessful attempt to broker a deal with Putin. European leaders and analysts, including German security expert Wolfgang Ischinger, have expressed disappointment over the lack of progress, with some viewing the Alaska summit as a diplomatic win for Russia.
