The body of a teenager was recovered from waters off the coast of Co Donegal after three teenagers, aged between 16 and 19, encountered difficulties while swimming in Lough Swilly. The body was found between Ned’s Point and Fahan, near Buncrana, and will be transferred to Letterkenny General Hospital, reports RTÉ.
RTÉ states that the alarm was raised around 4pm when the teenagers struggled in the water. One managed to swim ashore, while another was rescued and taken to Letterkenny General Hospital in a “very serious” condition, according to RTÉ. An extensive air and sea rescue operation, coordinated by Malin Head Coastguard, involved two RNLI lifeboats, Mulroy and Greencastle coastguard units, the Rescue 118 helicopter from Sligo, and up to a dozen local yachts, reports RTÉ. A Department of Transport spokesperson told RTÉ that a member of the public reported people in difficulty, prompting the deployment of Greencastle and Mulroy Coast Guard Units, Lough Swilly RNLI lifeboats, and the Rescue 118 helicopter.
In a separate incident, RTÉ reports that the body of an unidentified man was recovered from the sea off Co Wexford, east of Raven Point near Curracloe. The Irish Coast Guard and RNLI brought the body ashore, and it was transferred to University Hospital Waterford for a post-mortem examination, according to RTÉ. Gardaí were alerted around 2pm and are working to identify the man, with the post-mortem results to guide their investigation, RTÉ states.
