Strong winds and a lot of rain are expected to hammer Ireland and the UK in the days ahead as the Met Office formally names the first storm of 2025, reports The Mirror.

As a developing low pressure system moves towards Ireland, Storm Eowyn is predicted to cause several weather warnings, one month after Storm Darragh devastated many areas of the nation.

Given that current projections indicate the storm’s core will deliver strong gusts to that area, the south of the island may be the most severely impacted, reports The Mirror.

Although Met Eireann has not yet issued any weather warnings, our national forecaster has confirmed that Storm Eowyn has been named and has urged the people to be informed about any meteorological developments as circumstances get uncertain later this week.

Met Eireann has issued a weather advisory to midnight on Saturday due to the possibility of hazardous circumstances.

A spokesperson for Met Eireann said: “On Thursday night and during Friday, a deepening Low-Pressure system is forecast to track close to Ireland. Very strong winds are likely across the country with the potential for damaging wind gusts and disruption in places. High seas and spells of heavy rain are expected also. Met Éireann is continuously monitoring the evolving situation and weather warnings will be issued as confidence in the forecast track/intensity of the Low-Pressure system improves. Please check the met.ie website and app for updates to forecasts and warnings in the coming days,” reports The Mirror.
