The leaders, who shared a warm greeting and two handshakes on the tarmac earlier in the day, met with senior advisers in a “three-on-three” format, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. The press conference, set against a backdrop reading “PURSUING PEACE,” saw both leaders express optimism about their discussions, though few concrete details were shared.
Trump emphasized progress, stating, “Many points were agreed on, with just a few remaining,” but noted he would need to consult Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders for further steps. Putin, speaking through a translator, claimed an agreement had been reached but avoided specifics. No questions were taken, leaving reporters’ calls for clarity on ceasefire terms or civilian casualties unanswered.
The exclusion of Zelenskyy from the summit drew criticism from Ukraine and European allies, who fear decisions made without Kyiv’s involvement could undermine peace efforts. Trump, however, suggested a follow-up meeting with Zelenskyy could be on the horizon.
Speculation also swirled around Putin’s height during the event, with social media buzzing about the noticeably different microphone heights at the podiums. A body language expert noted Trump’s handshake as a “power move,” pulling Putin closer to assert control.
