In what can only be described as an awful situation no matter how you look at it, there’s a number of whales beached in Donegal with what’s being described as “very little anyone can do” for them even though rescue workers have been doing all they can to save the stranded whales.
It’s understood that rescue workers tried to save the whales a number of times but each time they tried to get them into the water, they ended up back on the beach and it now sadly appears that there’s little more can be done since asking the public to “please give them space and respect to die without too much stress.”
With that in mind however, there’s been consternation on social media today after two very unfortunate whales have ended up beached on Rossknowlagh beach in Co Donegal.
The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group posted the images publicly on their Facebook page from Thomas and Louise Coleman this morning and has since gone viral.
To the dismay and outcry of many comments in the post’s comments section, the post itself says that there’s “Very little that can be done for these deep-diving offshore species, which are the largest member of the beaked whale family. Please give them space and respect to die without too much stress.”.
Social media users have being commented that’s is disgraceful, disgusting and inhumane for the whales to be “left to die” and not at least try to do more, perhaps get more rescue workers with better machinery in to help, while others are saying that sometimes whales themselves purposely beach themselves to die.
The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group have since updated social media users following their initial post by declaring:
“Tide is now coming in on the live stranded Northern Bottlenose Whales. Some stranded and some still in water. All alive but stressed with high breathing rate. IWDG providing some first aid on the beach. Euthanasia of whales of this size very difficult without Immobolin, which is not available in the Republic. Shooting requires highly trained personnel. NPWS and Donegal County Council on their way to assess situation too.” Take a look at the posts below and tell us your thoughts.
