Petrol stations across Ireland face shortages as fuel protests block key depots and the Whitegate oil refinery in Cork, which supplies around 40% of the country’s transport and heating fuel. With terminals in Galway, Foynes, and Limerick also disrupted, industry leaders warn that up to half of national fuel supplies are inaccessible, and some forecourts could run dry as early as Thursday.
Protesters, including truck drivers and farmers angered by high prices despite recent government relief measures, have occupied sites to pressure authorities for further tax cuts. The Taoiseach described the refinery blockade as “national sabotage” and called in the Defence Forces to help clear critical infrastructure.
Motorists are already reporting empty pumps in parts of the west and elsewhere, raising fears of wider rationing if blockades continue into a third day. The government insists the protests are unacceptable and disrupt essential services, while organisers demand urgent talks. Drivers are advised to top up tanks early and monitor local stations.
