Breakthrough: Scientists at University College Cork discover compound in contraceptive pill that could prevent blindness




Scientists and Researchers at University College Cork have yet again discovered a potential major breakthrough, this time in the fight against blindness.

It is understood that top professors’ at the University have discovered a cure for Retinitis Pigmentosa, a inherited degenerative condition that causes blindness.

It is thought that scientists have a found a compound in the contraceptive pill that could actively halt the onset of the condition that reportedly affects around 1,500 people here.

According Prof Tom Cotter of University College Cork’s School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, the revolutionary new experimental treatment has already shown positive results in mice and is ready for human trials.

Prof Cotter also said that the drug could drastically halt the onset of the disease and could potentially improve many patients quality of life, before explaining: “We are using this neuroprotective approach.” “We have found a component of the progesterone contraceptive pill that gives a strong, very protective effect.”
