Britain’s Kier Stamer says people need to get ready for painful budget

The prime minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, has issued a “painful” budget forecast for October, reports RTE.

In his speech, he issued a warning that “things will get worse before they get better” in front of parliament’s reopening next week.

Rooting out the “deep rot” his administration inherited would take time, according to Mr. Starmer, who was speaking behind a lectern with the motto “Fixing the Foundations.”

In front of fifty individuals, including public employees, small company owners, and apprentices, he said that the return of parliament would not mean a return to “business as usual”, reports RTE.

He denied claims that he acted dishonestly in the general election campaign by failing to disclose proposed increases in taxes and reductions in spending.

“We have inherited not just an economic black hole but a societal black hole and that is why we have to take action and do things differently. Part of that is being honest with people about the choices we face and how tough this will be. Frankly, things will get worse before we get better,” he said, reports RTE.

According to Mr. Starmer, the Office for Budget Responsibility, the government’s watchdog, was likewise unaware of a £22 billion “black hole” in the public coffers.

In the future budget, he claimed, the people with the “broadest shoulders” will bear the most of the pain, reports RTE.

Speaking on the riots that occurred throughout the summer in several parts of the UK, Mr. Starmer claimed that they exposed a “unhealthy society”.

He attributed the 14 years of the previous Conservative government’s “populism” and “failure” on them, reports RTE.

He claimed that in order to accommodate the rioters, he had to make daily checks to see if there were enough jail spaces available.

It was a “disgraceful” scenario, according to Mr. Starmer, reports RTE.
