Budget 2024: Big bonus on the way for social welfare recipients

Coalition party leaders and ministers Michael McGrath and Paschal Donohoe met late into the night to discuss details of the 2024 budget, reports Breaking News.

However, it is understood that some key issues are still unresolved and further talks could continue on Monday.

Tuesday’s Budget marks the first time Fianna Fáil’s Michael McGrath will be finance minister.

His predecessor, Paschal Donohoe, however, will remain nearby and announce measures alongside McGrath as Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, reports Breaking News.

A €15-a-week increase in social benefits and pensions are among the latest measures to be included in Tuesday’s budget.

The budget is also expected to include an increase in student scholarships.

From January, more than 50,000 students could receive a salary increase of more than €300 per academic year. Postgraduate students can also expect a significant increase in stipends, reports Breaking News.

There may also be some relief for those who had to pay higher mortgage rates last year, and one-off measures to help people cope with living costs, but these are likely to be much smaller than last year.
