The Tánaiste and Labour party leader Joan Burton has claimed  that the liquidation of department store Clerys will cost the Irish taxpayers millions.

Ms Burton made her comments whilst she was attending the ICTU conference in Ennis earlier this afternoon, the Tánaiste also slammed the department store’s owners describing their handling of the situation as cowardly and said their actions are that of “predator capitalists”. Ms Burton said that the owners knowingly left their workers in the lurch which wasn’t right, and subsequently left the State having to address the workers  redundancy bill. The Tánaiste claimed that the State had better things to do with its money rather than bail them out.

She went onto say that the owners effectively placed its private obligation to pay redundancy onto the State. However the Tánaiste said she will use every legal avenue to vindicate the State and taxpayers’ rights in this regard.
