Cabinet approves the use of body cameras by Garda officers

Garda officers will now be allowed to wear body cameras whilst on duty as plans submitted before the Dáil this afternoon have been given approval.

Although legislation allowing for the use of bodycams has yet to pass through the Dail, it is believed that it will pass following proposals which were outlined by the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan.

Speaking about the introduction of body cams, Flanagan said that the use of such equipment has been shown to work in other countries and it will provide greater protection for both the Gardai and the general public.

The Justice Minister also said the equipment will be able to capture and record any event that a Garda officer is involved and therefore will provide further security to everyone as it will capture a clear record of any particular event.

He added that he believes that the use of such equipment will lead to the public putting more trust in the Gardai.
