Cabinet signs off on alcohol Bill with prices set to increase from January 2022

The Cabinet have signed off on the minimum price alcohol Bill following discussions on Tuesday.

Under the new Bill which was put forward by the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, the price of alcohol products will increase by 10c per gram.

It is understood that the new legislation will come into effect on January 1st 2022 which would see an end to cheap alcohol products.

The Bill which has been welcomed by medical experts across the country is aimed at cutting Ireland’s binge drinking culture.

However the Bill has drawn criticism from some retailers who say the legislation could encourage consumers to buy alcohol products in Northern Ireland.

Retailers say the legislation would particular hit border counties as they feel many will travel across the border to avail of cheaper drink.
