Calls for forer RTE CFO to give back €450,000 golden handshake

Breda O’Keeffe, the former chief financial officer of RTÉ, is claimed to have a “moral obligation” to repay the €450,000 she got as a departure package, according to the head of the Public Accounts Committee, reports RTE.

According to Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley, the Oireachtas Committee on Media hearing made it abundantly evident that the package was not subjected to the correct procedures.

Additionally, he voiced the opinion that, in light of her testimony before senators and TDs this afternoon, RTÉ Director of Human Resources Eimear Cusack need to take her stance into consideration.

Prior to her departure from the company, Ms. O’Keeffe received €450,000 in compensation, according to RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst, reports RTE.

Mr. Bakhurst testified before the committee that neither he nor “many people” at the broadcaster were aware, “until she said it in one of the committees,” that Ms. O’Keeffe had accepted a voluntary leave deal.

The committee was informed by Ms. Cusack that it was the only package of that size.

Last July, Ms. O’Keeffe informed the committee that she had taken advantage of a redundancy offer. In March 2020, she departed RTÉ, and Richard Collins took her place, reports RTE.
