Calls for Govt to use more taxpayer money on teaching Ukrainians how to speak English

The Department of Further and Higher Education reports that more than 26,000 Ukrainians registered for free English language courses in 2023, reports RTE.

There are, however, requests for additional English sessions to assist Ukrainians in getting ready for employment in Ireland, given that new entrants would get lower weekly benefits starting next month.

“I know many professionals who feel the language is a barrier to continuing what they were doing – especially with services like hairdressers, cosmetologists,” said Nataliya Byelyakova, of the Leitrim Development Company, which supports Ukrainian arrivals in the county, reports RTE.

“If they don’t have the language, they cannot communicate fully with Irish people,” she told RTÉ’s News At One.

The 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs) in Ireland are offering free English language courses to anyone who arrived from Ukraine under temporary protection measures.

According to data from the Department of Further and Higher Education, in 2023, over 26,000 Ukrainians registered for English as a Second Language courses, reports RTE.
