Calls for new mass campaign against homelessness

With the housing situation reaching crisis levels, the People Before Profit Alliance are calling for a massive popular campaign to raise awareness about this nationwide problem.

Advocates for the new ‘Right2Housing’ campaign are holding a meeting in Dublin this afternoon to discuss the issues surrounding housing, and what can be done about it.

Some homeless campaigners have deemed the Government’s housing policy as “disgraceful”, a “failure” and a “fraud”.

According to Government figures released last October, €3.8bn in funding were allocated for the Housing Strategy 2020. However, 100,000 families still remain on Local Authority waiting lists.

People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett has said that a new mass campaign along the lines of the Right2Water campaign would be called for. This new campaign would see thousands of people take to the streets to demand housing, rent control, and also an end to evictions.

Mr. Barrett said: “Our interest is to house people as a matter of right. The money is there, a rationale for doing it is there and it is the only thing that is going to solve the crisis.

“But we are going to need a massive movement of people power to achieve that.”
