Canadian authorities stand down the ground-based search for missing Irishman David Gavin -sub-aqua units called in to continue underwater search

Local authorities in Canada have now stood down the ground-based search for 26-year-old David Gavin, who went missing in Beaver Creek, Kinbasket Lake, around 50km from the town of Golden in British Columbia.

Sub-aqua units attached to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have now been called in to carry out further underwater searches.

The young Irishman, who hails from the small town of Breaffy in County Mayo, entered the water at the lake but never surfaced. His friends soon raised the alarm, but despite an extensive search, no trace has yet been found.

David was en route to Calgary for a Gaelic football championship with his teammates, when they stopped at the lake.

Airborne units will also scan the area periodically in the hope of finding David’s whereabouts.
