Care home worker stands accused of killing 19 disabled people in their sleep

A care home worker is facing up to 19 murder charges after admitting to the killing of 19 disabled people.

29-year-old Satoshi Uematsu is awaiting trial after admitting that he stabbed to death ten women and nine men as they slept inside a care home in Sagamihara, Japan, back in 2016.

The suspect entered the premises and systematically went from room to room, killing the residents. The victims ranged in age between 18 and 70.

The man reportedly said that the deaths ‘could not be helped’ and that he did it ‘for the sake of society.’

The case attracted wide media attraction as violent crime, particularly one of this nature, is relatively rare in Japan.
