Carer in Cork gets jailed over theft of more than €45,000 from elderly woman

A woman who stole more than €45,000 from an elderly woman while working as her carer has been sentenced to three years in prison, with the final six months suspended, reports RTE.

The sentencing hearing at Cork Circuit Criminal Court was told that Catherine Greig, 46, of The Cottage, Ballinaclashet, Bellsgully, Co. Cork, was ashamed and remorseful but unable to increase compensation.

Catherine Greig was employed as a carer for an elderly couple, husband and wife, in Kinsale, Co. Cork.

She had access to two of the couple’s bank accounts.

She gained access to a Bank of Ireland debit card and the card activity was monitored online by the adult child of the couple living abroad.

In mid-2019, the husband died, and three months later his wife, suffering from dementia, was sent to a long-term care home.

She pleaded guilty to a total of 17 theft charges.

Between July 2019 and January of last year, she embezzled €45,773.93 in sums ranging from €15 to several thousand euros.
