Ireland faces massive EU fine over work-life balance rights

European Commission will take Ireland, Belgium and Spain to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to notify national measures to fully transpose EU directives on parents’ and carers’ right to work-life balance, reports RTE.

The Commission has announced that it will ask the Court to impose financial sanctions on the three member states.

The EU Work-Life Balance Directive, which was adopted in 2019, aims to enable working parents to better reconcile work and private life.

The deadline for transposing the provisions of the work-life balance directive into national law was August 2022, but the Commission found that Ireland, Belgium and Spain had not yet communicated their transposition measures.

The bill also includes the right to request remote and flexible working, which will be introduced after the Industrial Relations Commission finalises a new code of conduct, reports RTE.
