A man whose wife stole money from a woman she was caring for was caught when her husband turned her in after hearing her talking in her sleep.

According to the Echo, father-of-three Antony Fort’s wife Ruth was a carer at a home where she looked after a wheelchair-bound woman.  Her husband became suspicious when she started over-spending.  She had previously spoken about how the woman she looked after had £98,000 in her bank account and that meant she knew a lot about the woman’s funds..

In December 2018 Antony woke up when Ruth was talking in her sleep about money.  Her purse was beside her on the ground and when he went to pick it up, he found the debit card belonging to the woman Ruth was caring for. He said that he told her to leave and felt he had no choice but to go to the police.

Ruth appeared before Preston Crown Court in february 2021 where she admitted theft of £7,220.  She was given a suspended sentence and conditions including drug rehabilitation sessions.  She later breached the conditions and ended up back in Court but was given one more chance by the judge

Ruth, 47, and Antony, 61, got married in 2010.  After some rocky years Antony said that he was happy that the relationship was back on track and he described the current situation as “heartbreaking”.   He said that everything was very difficult on his family as they were shamed by the local community even though they weren’t at fault.
