Cash machine? Over 1,000 drivers were caught speeding over the bank holiday weekend

An Garda Síochána reported that more than 1,000 drivers were caught speeding over the first four days of a policing operation during the Bank Holiday weekend, with 163 arrests for driving under the influence.

During an extensive Garda roads policing operation initiated on Thursday, January 30th, and extending through the Bank Holiday weekend, over 1,000 drivers were found speeding across Ireland. This operation, which included high-visibility checkpoints and mandatory intoxication testing, also led to the arrest of 163 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Some of the most egregious speed violations included a driver caught at 125km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N7 in Castlewarden, South Kildare, another at 100km/h in an 80km/h zone on the N4 in Doddsborough, Lucan, Dublin, and a third at 89km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Katharine Tynan Road in Dublin 24, reprots Breaking News.

The campaign, aimed at reducing road fatalities during the Bank Holiday, has unfortunately coincided with three road deaths, bringing the total number of road fatalities in Ireland this year to 14. This operation was a response to the increased risk of accidents during holiday periods, with Gardaí noting that the highest risk of fatal or serious injury road traffic collisions occurs between midday and 3pm each day of the weekend.

An Garda Síochána is urging all road users to exercise caution and patience on the roads, especially during times of increased traffic and social gatherings.
