Cheers Eamon: Petrol prices have gone up 2.5% in February

Fuel prices across the country remained relatively stable in February, the latest AA Ireland Fuel Price Survey shows.

The average price of petrol in February was 1.65 euros, which is 2.5% higher than in January 2023 this year.

But diesel prices have fallen slightly this month, averaging €1.68 – 1.7% lower than in January.

According to the AA, the average petrol driver now spends around €2,003 a year on fuel, while the average diesel buyer €1,680, reports RTE.

The average electric vehicle driver spends €1,306 on electricity, meaning that when it comes to refueling the cost of driving an electric vehicle is around 34% less than driving an equivalent petrol vehicle.

It said fuel prices remain volatile despite a Europe-wide ban on the import of Russian petroleum products, which came into force on February 5.

“We need clarity around the possible switching off the excise duty reductions overnight will inevitably lead to anxiety leading up to the end of February, which could lead to tailback filling stations or pumps running dry in certain areas. A more prudent approach would be to stagger this over two to three months,” the AA’s Paddy Comyn said, reports RTE.

“A recent AA Ireland Twitter account survey showed that 91% of respondents had never heard of the fuel,” he added, reports RTE.

According to the AA, the average motorist who uses petrol will pay more than €2,000 a year for fuel. On average, it costs 34% less to refuel an electric vehicle in a year than a petrol vehicle
