China has placed a village under lockdown after one of its residents died from the bubonic plague, CNN reports.
The victim died from circulatory system failure after contracting the disease, although all his traced contacts and fellow villagers have tested negative.
This is the second case – and first fatality – of the bubonic plague in the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia this year.
According to the WHO, between 1000 and 2000 people a year contract the deadly illness. During the ‘Black Death’ outbreak of the middle ages, up to 200 million people died of the plague in history’s worst pandemic.
