Christian persecution in Indonesia sees Christian girls and women forced to wear the Muslim hijab

The overwhelmingly Muslim country of Indonesia with a population of 279 million is using “a combination of psychological pressure, public humiliation, and sanctions to persuade girls to wear the hijab.”, claims the Daily Mail.

Human Rights Watch has been monitoring the Christian persecution by Muslims in Indonesia and their recent report highlights terrible abuses.

Schools right across Indonesia are forcing their female pupils to wear hijabs, a symbol of Muslim practices. The Christian pupils are told they will go to hell and the pupils have to listed to verses of the Koran being quoted at them. Teachers have been accused of cutting their pupils hair if it pokes out of the hijab. Pupils clothes have also been ripped if the teachers feel it’s too revealing.

The human Rights Watch report states that Indonesia was once a country that tolerated other people of different faiths such as Christians, Hindu and Buddhists but Muslim intolerance towards non-Muslims has increased substantially in recent years.

The education ministry last month banned state schools from forcing any female student – Muslim or non-Muslim – to wear headscarves, and threatened to pull government funding for non-compliance.
