During the United Nation’s long-term peacekeeping mission in Haiti hundreds of women, mostly underage girls, were left impregnated and have since become single mothers after trading sex for money and supplies with UN personnel for sex.

In a shocking report published on the academic website ‘The Conversation’ is was detailed that girls as young as 11 were “sexually abused and impregnated by peacekeepers”.

These girls and women were left to rare children alone, exacerbating their already desperate situation in the destitute country which was devastated by a powerful earthquake in January 2010 that left hundreds of thousands dead.

The natural disaster led to political upheaval which caused the situation to further deteriorate in the shattered capital of Port-au-Prince and across the country and led to greater UN intervention to maintain a semblance of peace and stability.

Following the publishing of the report Ten Haitian women are taking ground-breaking legal action against the UN to establish paternity and make child support claims the UK Times has reported.
