Clampdown: 750,000 social welfare recipient claims to be reviewed by government




The Department of Employment and Social Protection have confirmed that it is to set up a practice that will actively target social welfare fraud.

In a move that will cost the exchequer an estimated quarter of a billion euro per, the Department will look to clampdown on fraud.

The review which will analyse over 750,000 individual social welfare claims, will look to detect cases of fraud as well as reclaim €95 millon in overpaid social welfare payments.

According to RTÉ News, the new Compliance and Anti-Fraud Strategy 2019-2023, will also look to tackle employers who falsely claim that workers are self-employed.

Under the new system, the Department will introduce regular inspections as well as stricter penalties to those who are found guilty of fraud.

It is estimated that a total of €20 billion is spent on social welfare payments each year.
