In 2016 when the wars in Syria and Iraq were at their height and I.S controlled huge swathes of territory in the region EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said that most of those fleeing to Europe at the time we not refugees but economic migrants.
In a similar vein, Deputy Grealish said that the asylum seekers who would be housed at the Connemara Hotel would be African economic migrants not Syrian refugees.
At the time, the Dutch Commissioner estimated at lest 60% of those fleeing to Europe under the guise of asylum seekers were, in fact economic migrants.
Now with I.S defeated on the ground and the stability returning to both Iraq and Syria its safe to assume the ratio of economic migrants to asylum seekers has shifted.
