Extinction Rebellion (XR) have continued their campaign of disruption in the UK, this time targeting the nation’s free press newspapers.

According to the BBC over a hundred protestors blocked access to printing presses in Hertfordshire, Merseyside, and Scotland with vehicles and by chaining themselves to the ground. Among their slogans was ‘Free the Truth’ and ‘Refugees Welcome’.

Among the affected titles are the Sun, the Times, the Telegraph, the Daily Mail, and the Evening Standard as well as their Sunday counterparts collectively read by millions of people. Due to the roads being blocked around the presses, many newsagents had their newspapers delayed.

XR accused the newspapers of not adequately reporting climate change and polluting the public debate. Home Secretary Priti Patel tweeted that ‘This attack on free press, free society and democracy is completely unacceptable’.

According to Unesco, freedom of the press is a basic human right.
