Close to 200% increase in cocaine use since 2017, claims HRB

The Health Research Board reports that 13,104 cases of problem drug usage were treated in the previous year, reports RTE.

This year’s total is the highest ever and represents a rise of over 1,000 cases over 2022.

In the National Drug Treatment Reporting System data system, a case is associated with a treatment episode rather than an individual, reports RTE.

According to the HRB, this implies that an individual may be counted more than once in a single calendar year if they experienced multiple treatment episodes throughout that year.

The results indicate that nearly four out of five patients had never received medical attention.

One in three instances involved cocaine, which was the most often reported substance. Opioids, mostly heroin, cannabis, and benzodiazepines were the next most prevalent drugs, reports RTE.
