Cold snap en route: Weather expert pinpoints exact day temperatures set to plummet in Ireland as ‘big change’ forecast

Ireland’s weather is set to shift sharply next week, with the country expected to experience icy conditions as temperatures fall below freezing.

Alan O’Reilly, the amateur meteorologist behind the well-known Carlow Weather social media accounts, has cautioned that “we are going to see a big change in our weather” next week, reports The Mirror.

The weather specialist explained that very cold conditions will arrive on Wednesday and that “it’s going to feel colder than 0C during the day”, reports The Mirror.

Rain and drizzle will gradually spread from the northwest to most regions overnight. It will be a chilly night with temperatures generally between 0C and 4C, slightly milder along western coasts, and accompanied by light to moderate southwest to west breezes, reports The Mirror.

In a weather update shared with his followers on Saturday evening, O’Reilly said: “Thankfully, most of the rain has cleared or is clearing now after a very wet day, and sadly, some homes flooded in Wexford. Devastated to see families impacted. The good news at least is there’s not much rainfall to come Sunday or Monday,” reports The Mirror.

“We are going to see a big change in our weather. So if we look here we can see the upper air temperature forecast and we can see those blues starting to move down so much, much colder, air moving down. It’s going to feel bitterly cold, especially Wednesday and Thursday. A biting northerly wind, very cold. Windchill won’t feel above 0C during the day even. So, it’s going to feel like it’s going to be colder than 0C by day on Wednesday and Thursday. It is likely start to change again on Friday with less cold air moving in and become a little bit more unsettled,” reports The Mirror.

“There will be some rain on Tuesday, but the amounts will generally be low, and it will clear to sunny spells, and there will be some good sunny spells this week, but it’s a big change. Thankfully dryer but bitterly cold,” reports The Mirror.

Tonight is expected to remain mostly dry with extended clear spells, though there is a slight chance of an isolated shower, particularly in Ulster or north Connacht, with temperatures dipping to between 0C and 4C in mainly light northerly winds, bringing a risk of frost, reports The Mirror.

Monday is forecast to stay dry with bright spells for much of the day. Cloud will thicken from the northwest later, with some patchy rain and drizzle moving into parts of Ulster and Connacht by evening.
