The unseasonal cold is expected to last for another two or three days at least, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as finer weather is set to arrive towards the end of the week.
Daytime temperatures will hover at a chilly 6-8C until Wednesday, but milder conditions will develop after that.
There will be outbreaks of rain today and tomorrow, and hard frost overnight. The rain will turn into sleet on higher ground.
Cold and wet conditions will gradually ease off as Wednesday progresses, giving way to dry and milder conditions, with temperatures expected to hit around 10C on Thursday and beyond.
