A couple found dead at home in Co Clare yesterday have been named locally as Joe and Claire Collins, reports RTE.

The couple, both in their 50s, were well known in the wider area and had two adult daughters who were not at home in Killinaboy at the time of their deaths.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out later at University Hospital Limerick after their bodies were removed from the property earlier today.

The results of tests carried out by deputy state pathologist Dr Margot Bolster will determine the course of the Garda investigation, reports RTE.

The scene of the incident was secured for examination by the Garda National Technical Office.

Gardaí described the circumstances of the couple’s death as “unexplained”.

Their bodies were found separately at their home in Killinaboy after a family friend raised the alarm yesterday afternoon.

The man was found outside the bungalow and the woman’s body was found inside the house, reports RTE.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Cllr Joe Killeen said: “This is an awful shock and in such a tight-knit local community. There’s a huge sense of bewilderment and sadness in the area at this heartbreaking news. There is shock that such tragedy should come to our door and our community here in north Clare,” reports RTE.
