Palestinian officials said Israeli airstrikes hit three hospitals and a school in Gaza today, killing at least 22 people, reports RTE.

A ground battle reportedly took place at another hospital as Israeli forces battled Hamas in the heart of the enclave.

Officials said rockets landed in the courtyard of al-Shifa, Gaza’s largest hospital, in the early morning hours, damaging an Indonesian hospital and reportedly setting fire to the children’s cancer hospital.

The hospitals are clustered in northern Gaza, where Israel says Hamas militants attacked them last month.

They are full of patients and doctors, as well as people displaced by violence, reports RTE.

Israel says Hamas is using hospitals as human shields, which the group denies.

“Israel is now launching a war on Gaza City hospitals,” Mohammad Abu Selmeyah, director of Shifa Hospital, which was struck by missiles early today, told Reuters.

Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf Al-Qidra said Israel had bombed Shifa hospital buildings five times.

“One Palestinian was killed and several were wounded in the early morning attack,” he said by phone, reports RTE.

Ayman al-Masri, who was wounded in the leg at the beginning of the war, took refuge there ten days ago with his mother and sister.

“They struck Shifa today. Everyone started to run to the streets and we came here walking,” he told Reuters, reports RTE.
