Concerns raised as CervicalCheck screenings have fallen dramatically since the pandemic started

In what has been described as a very serious and potentially dangerous scenario to be faced with, CervicalCheck screenings have significantly fallen since the start of the pandemic.

It has been revealed that the number of women attending CervicalCheck screenings has dramatically fallen over the past 12 months.

According to CervicalCheck there were 117,000 screenings up until the end of November.

Speaking to an Oireachtas Committee on the issue CervicalCheck Clinical Director, Dr Noírín Russell, said this year’s figures compared to only 46% of the number of screenings carried out last year.

Dr Russell told the committee that extra capacity would be needed next year in order to clear a backlog.

However she added that due to delays of Covid-19 the service may never fully catch up.
