Garda killer Stephen Silver is set to appeal his sentence, reports The Mirror.

He told prison officials that he was deranged and insane when he took Detective Garda Colm Horken’s gun and shot him 11 times and had no idea what he was doing.

He claims he remembers little or nothing about the incident and can’t understand why the jury didn’t believe him, reports The Mirror.

The 46-year-old former motorcycle mechanic is due to face a mandatory 40-year sentence for manslaughter next Wednesday, April 19, after pleading guilty a month earlier.

Silver is currently being held in Mountjoy Prison’s Special Psychiatric Unit along with several other inmates while awaiting sentencing.

It is operated under the umbrella of the central mental hospital.

He has a long medical history. The killer is expected to be taken to Castlerea or Midlands Prison to serve his sentence.

A prison source said: “Silver can’t believe he was convicted. He says he was out of his mind that day and doesn’t remember much about the incident,” reports The Mirror.

Both the Gardai and Garda Horkan’s family were exonerated from the sentence.

The brutal murder in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon in June 2020 shocked the nation, reports The Mirror.
