The FBI has swooped on a 21-year-old military reservist believed to be behind the leaking of classified Pentagon briefings on a gamer discord which has embarrassed the U.S and its allies, particularly in relation to the conflict in Ukraine.
Jack Teixeira was arrested on Thursday afternoon, shortly after the FBI announced that its agents had conducted an “authorized law enforcement activity” at his home in North Dighton, Massachusetts which U.S Attorney General Merrick Garland announced he had approved.
Teixeira is a member of the of the intelligence wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard and reportedly came across the documents while in work.
The New York Times had identified Teixeira as the figure responsible for posting hundreds of classified military documents on a Discord server after working with “open source intelligence” outfit, Bellingcat, which is NATO funded, to identify him.
The New York Times’ roll in identify the whistle-blower to authorities sets a frightening precedent for others who may seek to reveal government secrets in the future.
The Pentagon briefings reveal the U.S spying on its allies to ensure they tow the line the Ukraine conflict and also expose the fact that much of the pro-Ukrainian propaganda echoed by Western media outlets is pure fiction.
