News of a 12-year-old girl with no pre-existing medical conditions being put on a ventilator and currently struggling to cling to life in an Atlanta hospital has increased worries among parents about the danger posed by the Covid-19 virus to their children.
The girl, who is only identified as Emma, was diagnosed with pneumonia on March 15 and later tested positive her cousin, Justin Anthony, told CNN.
Anthony told CNN that Emma’s mother approved him telling her story to the media in order to get the message out that young people were also in harm’s way.
It is commonly thought that young people are relatively immune to coronavirus or at least it will have a mitigated effect on them and this has led younger people to take the advised social distancing less seriously but doctors have pleaded for them to do otherwise.
Young people have also been reminded that while may not suffer the worst consequences of the virus they can still spread it to older people they come in contact with.
