A spokesperson for the Employment Affairs and Social Protection department has confirmed that 283,000 more people had applied for the Covid-19 emergency payment by Friday last.
It is understood that a large number of companies have also applied for the wage subsidy scheme put in place in recent days.
There are now dire predictions for the Irish economy as most commercial activity has ceased, and probably won’t resume for many weeks.
