Tragically a dog owner died after jumping into the river to save his beloved pet. The 21-yr-old man and a 20-yr-old woman entered the Weaver River near Weir Street in Northwich, Cheshire after one of their dogs fell into the water. Police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene shortly before 5am Saturday to find the woman near a steep river bank.
Firefighters put out a ladder and helped her to the mainland, police said. She was then examined by paramedics before being hospitalised but has since been released. The dog that was in the water was also saved, but the man sadly drowned.
An extensive search of the river and its banks was carried out for the man, involving a police helicopter and a submarine rescue team, as well as a lifeboat from the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and a rapid water rescue team. They sadly found a body in the river around 2:10pm.
Tributes have been paid for the young man with emergency workers saying it was a very sad accident.
