Coronavirus: India closes its rail network as Covid-19 outbreak threatens to bring the country’s health system to its knees

India has taken the unprecedented decision to shut its rail network, the first time it has done so in its 167 years of history.

All passenger trains will remain parked until April 14 at least.

Indian health authorities have now moved to convert 20,000 old train carriages into makeshift isolation wards ahead of an expected deluge of Covid-19 patients.
