Coronavirus: Italy announces easing of lockdown measures

Italy has today announced the easing of lockdown measures, after more than eight weeks of enforced restrictions.

The Mediterranean country has been ravaged by Covid-19, particularly across northern regions.

A number of companies will reopen on May 4, while retail shops will do likewise two weeks later. Restaurants, bars, and other hospitality establishments are scheduled to open in June.

Many now fear that a second wave of infections might hit a country already weakened by the original infection.

Covid-19 has so far killed over 26,000 people in Italy, with almost 200,000 confirmed cases.
