Coronavirus: Italy’s scientific adviser says UK should have gone into lockdown 10 days ago

Britain should have been locked down 10 days ago and is now likely to have a more severe coronavirus infection than Italy, warns an expert from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Walter Ricciardi, the Italian government’s scientific advisor who called for the lockdown in Italy, told Sky News that Britain had the advantage of seeing what had happened in his home country and that it was based on the evidence that happened there.

“When we scientists put the evidence on your table, you should take action,” Mr Ricciardi said.

“When you take the decision late you pay a price in sick people and in deaths.”

Mr Ricciardi went on to say:
“When I looked at some images of the London Tube or some mass gatherings that happened when we already had the impression that this was dangerous, this was a kind of example that could have been avoided.

“Having had the example of Italy, the UK could have adopted its (lockdown) much earlier.”

The health expert said that the lockdown could go on a month at least or longer.
