Covid-19 has killed one person in one of India’s largest slums, prompting fears of a massive outbreak in the region.
The victim, a man in his 50s, died just hours after testing positive for Covid-19. He lived in the Dharavi slum, which is home to almost 1m people.
Dharavi, sited in the Indian city of Mumbai, has a population density of about 280,000 people per square kilometer, almost thirty times greater than New York.
Local doctors now fear that if Covid-19 takes hold there, the fragile health system in the region will collapse entirely and decisively.
