Coronavirus outbreaks in schools are now likely, says HSE

The Health Service Executive CEO has said that the lockdown restrictions had a significant negative impact on children’s education.

At a HSE conference, Paul Reid said that a report to be released on the effects of Covid-19 showed that primary school children were hit the hardest by the restrictions.

He said that children with additional learning and / or special needs are disproportionately affected and that fear levels in children could rise due to a lack of routines and lack of socialising.

He said it was an important for children, parents and HSE to go back to school.

Reid said that the state and public health systems need schools to support many of their services and they need a functioning school system to support health services.

He also said that they needed the children to go back to school for their own health workers and workers so that they could get better support.

According to RTE, Paul Reid said that outbreaks in schools are likely but that the HSE have enough significant experience to cope with such outbreaks.
