Coronavirus: Over 850,000 people now claiming unemployment benefits as crisis deepens

Over 850,000 people are now claiming unemployment benefits, it has emerged today.

The coronavirus crisis has wiped out tens of thousands of jobs across Ireland, sending the economy into a downward spiral that is likely to lead into a marked recession over the coming months.

The Irish Government is now providing those who lost their job because of the pandemic with an emergency weekly 350e payment, which will last for 12 weeks.
