Coronavirus: Spanish army units ‘find dead bodies inside care homes’ during mission to clean and disinfect premises

RTE reports that Spanish army units tasked with cleaning and disinfecting care homes discovered elderly residents ‘abandoned’, and also found people ‘dead in their beds’.

Spanish care homes for the elderly have been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus pandemic. No fewer than 17 residents died in a care home in Madrid in recent days, with dozens of infections reported among residents in other homes across the capital.

Spain is the European country with the second-highest number of infections and deaths (2,182 as of Monday). The situation is so bad that a leisure ice rink will be used as a temporary morgue.
