Uniforms, stationery, sports equipment, and other ancillary costs associated with attending school are putting undue financial pressure on parents, a new survey reveals.
The survey, carried out by the Irish League of Credit Unions, reveals that the average cost of sending a child back to school has risen to €1,185.
The survey also finds that a third of parents fall into debt over the costs, and must borrow an average of €357.
Most parents are also expected to make a ‘voluntary’ contribution to the school, which averages at €118 per child. This figure has increased from €112 in 2015.
The survey recommends careful planning, saving money during the summer to cover the costs, shop around to find the best deals, and above all, avoid moneylenders.
