The Council of Europe, an international, pro-European group representing 47 countries, has been forced to remove billboard posters and tweets promoting a campaign that promoted Muslim women who choose to wear headscarves. Opposition to their campaign has received a backlash in France.
A slogan on one advert read: “Beauty is in diversity as freedom is in hijab” and “Celebrate diversity and respect the Hijab”.

Several prominent French politicians condemned the message and argued the hijab did not represent freedom reports the BBC.

France’s youth minister, Sarah El Haïry was shocked by one campaign poster saying the campaign encouraged women to wear headscarves. She said this message jarred with the secular values of France, which had expressed its disapproval of the campaign.
